The instinct when a line cannot keep up is to buy more capacity. Often that is the wrong move — or at least a premature one. What OEE Actually Measures

OEE is the product of three honest fractions, and each one points at a different kind of lost capacity.

Availability

The share of planned time the line is actually running. Lost to breakdowns, changeovers and waiting — the gap between scheduled and running.

Performance

How close the line runs to its rated speed while it is running. Lost to micro-stops, slow cycles and minor stalls that rarely get logged but quietly bleed output.

Quality

The share of output that is good first time. Lost to scrap and rework — capacity you paid to produce and then threw away.

Multiply the three and you get a single number that is brutally honest about how much of your nominal capacity you are really getting. A line that feels busy can have a far lower OEE than the floor believes.

  • Running below rated speed “to be safe”

Process optimisation turns the OEE picture into action: targeting the biggest losses first, tightening changeovers, stabilising speed, attacking the root causes of scrap, and improving maintenance so availability rises.
